HEALTH CARE PROVISION FOR PEOPLE IN GOVERNMENT – THE TRUE PICTURE OF WHAT GHANAIANS ARE TAKEN FOR
It is well understood that health care is basic requirement for peaceful and healthy economic growth. Therefore, like any other essential sector of the economy, the sector has a ministry on its own that oversees the day-to-day policy direction of the sector. This ministry and others alike are all under the government. Thus, what the leaders of the ministry and the government consider befitting for Ghanaians are what we see at our healthcare facilities.
However, the reasonable question that every level-headed person would ask is: ‘Are the leaders of Ghana part of Ghanaians?’ Their everyday activities are being financed by the taxpayers’ money and revenues accrued from resources of our land. Yet they consider themselves more human than any other person in Ghana. Else, why would they always seek medical care overseas while other Ghanaians die of same sorts of ailments? They are fully aware that such medical facilities are lacking in Ghana; yet they do not have the will to provide such health care facility to cater for us all.
The Vice President of Ghana, Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang is reported to have been flown overseas for treatment upon her recent ailment. It is made known that she sought initial treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). The report added that the nature of the ailment is beyond the scope of all hospitals in Ghana; thus, she is flown overseas for treatment. It is evident that all the cost involved in the treatment is to be borne by the Ghanaian populace. And the sad part once again is that when other Ghanaian other than those of them in government falls into the same health condition, the fellow would die at the mercy of the ailment. And even if such a person is to seek same medical care abroad, the cost of treatment shall be against the purse of the patient. But it is no fault of his that such facility or specialist is not available in Ghana.
The current Speaker of Parliament, A. S. K. Bagbin travelled several times to seek health care asylum in Dubai, United Arab Emirate in 2022 when he was still a Speaker of Parliament. Notwithstanding that, the said speaker had been a Member of Parliament over a decade. Yet during all those periods they never realised the health care resources deficit in the nation.
The aforementioned personalities are just a few of the instances to buttress this devilish behaviour. This practice has been the trend since time immemorial. Interestingly, people holding equivalent, same, and even higher position than these Ghanaians in the territories where they go for the medical care seek healthcare in their homeland. This implies, therefore that, leaders of such jurisdiction are invariably after the welfare of their citizenry. Then, how can one convince the reasonable Ghanaian that it is right to spent our resources on the leaders of Ghana to seek medical care abroad while other Ghanaians die of same conditions in Ghana?
Ghanaians must therefore be circumspect and conscious of this attitude of our leaders so as to bestow on them treatment that they deserve. They are expected to provide us with everything they think is needed for comfortable and successful life. But to use our resources to make provision of such conditions only for themselves and their families, is unacceptable, barbaric and devilish.
