Implementation of the electronic levy, E-Levy, was welcomed with all sorts of sentiments. The Ghanaian general populace considered it as a devilish act instituted to nurture anger and malice. In view of this the then opposition political party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) solemnly promised Ghanaians that they would abolish it when they attain power.
Against the aforementioned background, His Excellent John Dramani Mahama has, today, April 2, 2025 assented a legislative bill to abolish the E-Levy. Other bills that raises anger and disparages confidence in leadership were also abolished. Such bills include: Betting Tax, and Emission Tax.
The E-Levy which imposed 1.5% tax on MOMO transfers (excluding first GHS 100 in a day) was introduced in 2022 under the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo. Though Ghanaians expressed serious displeasure about the levy the government was adamant to consider the will of the citizenry. They rather revised the rate from 1.5% to 1% which never pleased the citizenry.
